Dharamsala
General Information
Dharamsala is the winter capital of Himachal Pradesh, India. A municipal corporation city in the upper reaches of the Kangra Valley and is surrounded by dense coniferous forest consisting mainly of stately Deodar cedar trees. The suburbs include McLeod Ganj, Bhagsunag, Dharamkot, Naddi, Forsyth Ganj, Kotwali Bazar (the main market), Kaccheri Adda (government offices such as the court, police, post, etc.), Dari, Ramnagar, Sidhpur, and Sidhbari.
McLeod Ganj town, lying in the upper reaches, is known worldwide for being the home of the Dalai Lama. In 1959, the Dalai Lama fled Tibet after a failed uprising against the Chinese government. He crossed the Himalayan mountains into India, seeking refuge. The Indian government offered him land in the small town of Dharamsala, in the state of Himachal Pradesh.Since then, Dharamsala has been the center of the Tibetan diaspora and the home of the Dalai Lama. It is also a hub for tourism for those who want to explore this fascinating country with its many natural wonders.

Dharamsala has an average elevation of 1,457 m (4,780 ft), covering an area of almost 8.51 km2 (3.29 sq mi). Dharamsala is located in the Kangra Valley, in the shadow of the Dhauladhar mountains.
The city is divided into two distinct sections. Kotwali Bazaar and the surrounding markets are referred to as "Lower Dharamsala" or just "Dharamsala." Further up the mountain is McLeod Ganj. A steep, narrow road connects McLeod Ganj from Dharamsala and is only accessible to taxis and small cars, while a longer road winds around the valley for use by buses and trucks. McLeod Ganj is surrounded by pine, Himalayan oak, and rhododendron.

Trekking in Dharamsala
A trip to Dharamsala would be incomplete without a trek to one of the mountain ranges. With their dense forests that are populated with pine, oak and rhododendron trees, the trails would certainly leave you in the space of serenity. Not to mention how you will also get to experience the lake waterfall as well as scenic glaciers. You can head to the Kangra valley for a Triund trek, or you can choose to visit the Kareri village to get the trekking trails to some of the fun places. In fact, rock climbers would actually have a good time here as you would get to indulge in some interesting adventure sports.
