Lessons of Buddhist spirituality
Gyuto Tantric monastery
Rest and denial of vanities
The Gyuto Tantric Monastery, sometimes referred to as Gyuto Order or Karmapa Monastery is one of the must visit spots in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh. It specializes in the study of Tantric meditation, Tantric ritual arts and Buddhist philosophy.
It was founded in Tibet in 1474 by the main disciple of the first Dalai Lama, Jetsun Kunga Dhondup. After the communist Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959, the monastery was re-established in India.
It is the abode of Karmapa, the Head of the Kagyu Tibetan Buddhism. Karmapa means the one who carries out buddha-activity or the embodiment of all the activities of the Buddha. The main chamber of the monastery has a majestic statue of the Buddha. Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje houses nearly 200 monks who practice the major Tantric texts including Guhyasamaja, Chakrasamvara and Yamantaka. They have passed these lineages to the younger generation of monks for more than 500 years.
The main temple at Gyuto Monastery has a magestic large statue of Lord Buddha, in addition to other aritifacts and articles used in rituals of worship.
At a distance of 8 km from Dharamsala and 13 km from McLeod Ganj, Gyuto Monastery is located at Sidbhari on the main road to Palampur.
Visitors can also take part in the prayers on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
One of the main principles of Buddhist settlements is peace and denial of vanity, and this can be seen here. Students here are not in a race with each other or the outside world for being number one. They learn enough skills to make a living, spend a lot of time volunteering and helping the community. They live their lives without the selfishness that characterizes mainstream society (thoughts like "I should make more money," "I need to show that I and my family are better than others," and so on).

This simplicity, absence of the anchors of consumer society, and selflessness set them apart from us ordinary people, even though many modern people might wonder why they are wasting their time in a confined space. If such a thought occurs, try to think about it — perhaps it will lead you to some conclusions.
